You can't criticize Allen for not helping Madison. Human psychology is a greatly underrated subject. Allen figured that Madison's secret was exceptionally huge, but he never would've even COME CLOSE to guessing that it was the fact that she's a mermaid. He was simply too shocked by the revelation that she's not human to help her. If you saw something in real life that you thought could only exist in your mind, you'd behave EXACTLY like Allen did.
