Ahh.. avonex. What can I say. My skin, although still dimpled and black and blue in some places from the copaxone, isn't looking as bad. It has dried out quite a bit. I chose to do my shot earlier in the day today, with a pre-medication of aleve and some hydrocodone a Dr. prescribed to me for migraines. Using the same pre medication last week, I woke writhing in pain.. throbbing in every joint, sweating, dry heaves, then finally a rash. Hopefully taking it earlier in the day will at least give me sleep tonight.

  • I hate doing this every week but its way better than the flare ups

  • I talked to the people at Biogen and they said there is no need to aspirate with Avonex. If it goes in a vein, so be it.

  • awful disease, my friend has it.

  • you are supposed to wipe the area clean with the alcohol swab before you take the shot. you also need to tap the syringe and push any air out of it before putting it in. i've been on Avonex for over 4 years now...your body will get used to eventually but for 2 years it made me very sick! I wish you the best of luck and many blessings :)

  • You are so brave and limber. I self medicated Avonex for 2 years in my legs before I got married and my wife started helping by doing my arms. In total I had Avonex for 10 years and now Doc switched me to Tysabri. The physical effects were (as you should know by now) feeling flu like, tired and not hungry for 24 hours. Then back to "normal" for 6 days. Normal is different for everyone. I "felt" better on Avonex, but had yearly exacerbations. Tysabri is a once per month infusion that takes 3 hrs.

  • Thanks

  • very very good advice! I am an MLT/phebotomist and i have been giving my mother this shot for about 5 years and i always release the air and check for flow back in the needle to make sure im not in a vein

  • Your doing great! Just a bit of a advice from a fellow figthter of MS that takes Avonex and also is a rn...... You need to get the air out of the needle before injection and also once you inject the needle you really should pull back to on the syringe a little bit to make sure you do not see any blood come up...... just a few small tips.. My shot night is either going to be tomorrow or tuesday... ugggg.... Not looking forward to it... Best of Luck!!!!

  • I wish you all the best. MS is terrible. I am on Betaseron and I get terrible site reactions. My doc is thinking of changing me to Avonex. Hang in there!

  • Your doing great! I have been on Avonex for a year, and trust me, the side effects get much better. Mine are all gone!

Even after a year, you still do the shot quicker than i do,. I'm not afraid of needles, but injecting myself is a chore because i always psyche myself out.

Hope avonex works well for you!
