Leading Justice Activists Unite to Announce "Stop the Machine! Create a New World!" action this October on 10th Anniversary of Invasion of Afghanistan and Beginning of 2012 Federal Austerity Budget

Washington, DC: A coalition of advocates for peace and social, economic and environmental justice have announced that they will come to Washington, DC this October to demand an end to corporatism and militarism.

In the opening paragraphs of their statement they say:
October 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions.
We call on people of conscience and courage—all who seek peace, economic justice, human rights and a healthy environment—to join together in Washington, D.C., beginning on Oct. 6, 2011, in nonviolent resistance similar to the Arab Spring and the Midwest awakening.

The organizers are asking people to sign a pledge to come to Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. for the October action which will include music, speakers and a call for a sustained presence and actions of nonviolent civil resistance. People will be protesting not only the Congress and White House but the forces that control the government - lobbyists, corporations, corporate think tanks and the corporate media

Many notable figures from a broad range of peace and justice groups have already signed on. Among them are Baldemar Velasquez, Ben Manski, Brian Becker, Bhikkhu Bodhi, Chris Hedges, Cornel West, Dave Rovics, David Himmelstein, David Swanson, Debra Sweet, Glen Ford, Jane Hamsher, Jodie Evans, Medea Benjamin, Mike Ferner, Larry Pinkney, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Rosa Clemente, Steffie Woolhandler, Ted Rall, The YES Men among others. Their endorsement and quotes from some of them can be viewed at http://www.October2011.org.

In a statement released today some of the organizers write "Our country faces crises on every front: the economy, education, jobs, the environment, health care, the wealth divide, an Empire stretched too thin and ready to shred. None of these crises have to exist. Just and sustainable solutions are available and known. What stands in the way of all of these solutions is concentrated corporate power."

The gathering in DC this October is a reflection of the growing culture of creative nonviolent resistance in the United States. Many individuals and organizations are reaching similar conclusions that the time is now to join our struggles for peace and social, economic and environmental justice. In this historic moment, our common vision for democratization of all facets of our society is coming to fruition.

Anyone who thinks that their country "is the greatest in the world" should be restrained as a complete nutcase. Superiority is not cool my friend. USA is certainly not the freest country in the world, I think you'll find most of Europe have far greater liberties yet greater equality than the US. God, even Canada is WAY ahead of the US

  • Stop the Machine! and OWS is Otpor. Google: "ows otpor" and "the revolution business"

  • Anyone who believes that someone has a right to take money from a person or group of persons who have worked for it and give it to another person or group of persons who have not is what the politicians refer to behind closed doors and in their inner circles as "useful idiots" and they are right. Socialism has NEVER worked and if the hasn't, it is certain that communism hasn't!

  • Anyone who feels their country is not "the greatest in the world" needs to get the heck out. We were the beacon of light for the world. What else do you do where you dont want to be the best. One of those nutcases who thinks all 25 kids should get a first place ribbon? Fools and failures

  • I also want to stop the machine. Your machine. How much more can you stop? 9 percent unemployment. 16 percent poverty? If you guys had your way we would live in tents and beg for food. After we redistributed all the wealth

  • Endless enjoyment! Without liberals what would be funny? Propoganda. False at that. An Arab Spring! that's working out well. I'll keep cashing my checks from Mr. Koch. He sure helps my family of 6 . Corporations are made up of people. Without people you have no corporations. its what our 401 k's are invested in. Your cell phone, computer, tv, car.....all made by corporations. More and more overseas because you rocket scientists are making it impossible for them to do business here.

  • @zanaelf OUR BLOOD IS IT`S FUEL!

  • The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle. If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.
