This most unusual track from March 1971, is from Eddie Kendricks who was a well-known member of The Temptations, sadly he died on October 5, 1992 of lung cancer in Birmingham USA at the age of 52. It was on Tamla label 54203 and not released in the UK. As with all Motown tracks it grows on you with every play, please let me know what you think? John

  • i never woulda dreamed that when i was a little girl or a young teen listening to this back then, that in 2008-9 and beyond that I would be (By HIS GRACE and Love) listening to all of this again... it is surreal and eternal love, i just cry inside and am so very happy that its hard as ever to describe, im greatful to Motownmagic1959 but i just heard this song today. Glory to God above.

  • It's now Motown's 50th Anniversary, and I added a new track video in HD (720p) so I'm glad to hear you have enjoyed this track so, like me, I never get bored with them, (really!) JOHN

  • Wow! This is the first time I've heard this song. Eddie sounds so young. He sings falsetto and tenor on 'Can I' and another song that I can't remember at the moment. What a great talent he is (he will live forever through his songs).

  • I was a die heart EK fan. This was his first single after he left the temptations. This freaked me out too. Never heard EK sing in his natural tenor voice. I studied music, and this would have almost been impossible for him to sing this in falsetto. Just about every song he did with the temps was in his falsetto. We never heard his natural tenor.until this song. Your speaking voice is your singing voice. So I knew it was him.

  • oooh what a song oooo loved her ****

  • OMG I have never heard this before. This is so beautiful!! Eddie did a true number on this song. His vocals on this particular song sounds so ahead of its time. I have got to learn this so I can sing it myself. Thank you so much for this beautiful post.

  • thanks for nice music as well love as well thx

  • The first time we heard Eddie in his natural voice was in 1963. The Album was called Meet the Temptations and the song was called "May I have this Dance." It's posted on Youtube if you want to hear it!

  • Also, this is not the first time we heard Eddie's natural voice. He loved singing with it and recorded some songs on eariler albums in his natural voice. They just would release any of them as singles. I always play a little of this song and have my friends guess who is singing. They never get it right until he comes to the part of the song "Now and then her friends drop in.."

  • Some of this information is not correct. This album was actually recorded while Eddie was a member of the Temptations. If you have a copy of the Album you would see that the album cover has comments by Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams. It was the success of this album that gave Eddie the confidence to leave the group.

  • @mystkpizza This is interesting as Motown list's it in the official catalog as the "A" side Tamla 54203 in March 1971, not that it matters, his next single was "I Did It All For You" Tamla 54210 in July 1971! a great tune too eh? there's 19 more singles listed alone after that. JOHN

  • @mystkpizza I had the Album ALL BY MYSELF so it really didnt' matter to me because the WHOLE ALBUM was the shit followed by MY PEOPLE... HOLD which was another baddass album by Eddie. I played those 2 albums in rotation from years. Some of the baddest recorded tracks in Motown History are on those 2 album. RIP Eddie.. we'll always love you, your songs and your talents...

  • @mystkpizza If you look at the Motown Discography it lists This Use To Be The Home Of Johnnie Mae as the {B} side and Its So Hard For Me To Say Good Bye as the {A} Side, but This Use To Be The Home Of Johnnie Mae was the song being pushed and got all the airplay in the Spring & Summer of 1971.
