considering how they are programned to like contact, wander around, and be curious, I would not be suprised if the ball was acting as a stimuli, therefore yeah, i bet he was playing with the ball.
Also, notice how when it rolled to the side he went after it again. They have sensors all over their bodies and track movement like that.
