--------------
The Scottish Labour Party leader, Wendy Alexander, says "Bring it on" to a referendum on the question of Scottish independence, supposedly proposed by the SNP (Scottish National Party) yet delayed by the SNP Government of Alex Salmond which seems content to continue to rubber-stamp Scotland being subjected to UK rule.

This 2-part video is from BBC Newsnight Scotland 6th May 2008.

This is part 2 with Gordon Brewer presenting and interviewing Wendy Alexander, Leader of the Scottish Labour Party and Labour leader in the Scottish Parliament.

Part 1 features a report by Simon Willis.
Questions by Glen Campbell and Brain Taylor.
Other contributions by -
Duncan McNeil MSP Chairman Labour Group at the Scottish Parliament.
Richard Simpson MSP Labour.
Nicola Sturgeon MSP SNP Deputy Leader and Scottish Government Health Secretary
Brian Wilson, former Labour Minister.

Peter Dow comments -

Wendy's "Bring it on" to a Scottish independence referendum.

So Wendy Alexander has challenged Alex Salmond to bring on a referendum with a fair question on Scottish independence. Interesting.

Or else what, Wendy? If Salmond doesn't bring on a fair referendum in good time and wants to delay until 2010/11 or wants to rig the question so that Scots can't vote for the independence we want without being seen perhaps to vote at the same time for the Salmond and the Queen that we don't want, then what will Wendy do, what will she say?

Will Wendy now finally find the courage actually to oppose the Salmond-led royalist, fascist state misrule in Scotland? Will she finally lead Scottish Labour to vote Salmond down in a vote of no confidence?
Has Wendy got the courage to bring on an early general election?

Or will Wendy do nothing, as per usual? Will she wait until Salmond is ready? Will she wait until the statutory 4 year term of the Scottish parliament is up - giving Salmond a free ride until then just to keep the existing Scottish Labour MSPs safe with their seats in parliament?

Will Wendy now even oppose Salmond's budgets? Will she become a real opposition leader at last?

Or will Wendy do the same nothing as now when Salmond's no-strings budget allows Scottish officialdom to misrule Scotland with the same cruelty and incompetence as before? After all, for example, the universities and the dentists are still not open to some Scots who need them.

So it is nice that Wendy is supporting the principle of a referendum on the question of Scottish independence.

What is not so nice is that Wendy has yet to oppose Salmond 100% and yet to try to oust him as First Minister.

Wendy has made people sit up and take notice with her "bring it on" remarks. Speaking as a Scotsman, I imagine that Wendy's pussy may taste that wee bit sweeter tonight but what now Wendy? A political honeymoon can only last so long.

Since Wendy seems to be so keen on abstaining on important votes, maybe she can be persuaded to campaign for Labour supporters to ABSTAIN on the independence referendum, rather than oppose independence?

That might work out OK so long as there is no daft 40%-of-the-electorate-must-vote rule like there was in the Scottish Assembly referendum.

  • If Scotland was Independent it would be as rich as Norway with all that Oil in the North Sea.

I wonder if Scotland was to become an Independent Nation would it keep the Monarchy like the Irish Free State, or get rid of it like the Irish Republic?

  • haszo - It is helpful to distinguish between "Scotland" the land and "the Scots" the nation and people of Scotland.

When the difference is clear then you will see that whilst the Scots CAN become a more independent nation and a less enslaved-by-the-UK nation (by ending the UK's rule over Scotland) NO LAND can become independent, only nations can.

  • haszo - Whilst "Scotland" CANNOT become independent because Scotland is a land and it is not a nation, the Scots CAN INDEED, become an independent nation but ONLY when we Scots elect the a president of a Scottish republic.

If the Queen is head of state, we Scots would be enslaved - told who our head of state was to be.

If the Scottish monarchy is there, we Scots will not be independent. That is why the SNP royalists are liars and really opposed to Scottish national independence.

  • @tantawi1992 "Open to all" means including Canadians.

The For Freedom Forums is a political discussion forum and people come with their own political ideas to debate with others, compare approaches, win support, make contact etc.

Therefore I do not have a "group" nor group positions.

In the forums one may support or oppose "sovereigntist" ideas as you wish.

I do not know what you mean by "sovereigntist" but if you would like to explain in the For Freedom Forums you'd be welcome to.

  • @tantawi1992 Canadians have the same head of state as Scots, therefore if we Scots, Canadians, Australians, English etc. would like the freedom to elect our own head of state and the additional freedoms which come with establishing a state which is held accountable and required to respect the constitutional rights of the citizen, say by establishing a Scottish republic, a Canadian republic or a Quebec republic then we all have the same enemy.

Also, the For Freedom Forums is "OPEN TO ALL"

  • @tantawi1992 I tried to message you to invite you to register a username with the For Freedom Forums for robust political debate, inspired by Scots, open to all.

But all I get when clicking on "tantawi1992" is "This channel is not available." So I can't message you.

  • IF Kosovo can have independence than ANyone can and have to strive for independence It has never been easier.

  • WoodlandHunter - Wrong. If you agree with Scottish national independence - democratic freedom for us Scots - then you need to realise that Salmond's 2010 referendum plan is a fraud to deliver independence for the state and to continue the slavery of the Scots under the crown.

The "Right Honourable" Alex Salmond (member of the Queen's Privy Council) is a UNIONIST of the variety which supports the Union of the Crowns, albeit he wants the Scottish state under the Queen but not within the UK.

  • BoxingBadBoy77 - The Queen would never allow the Scottish military to be used against universities with royal charters run by royalist twits so the way to get better run universities and a strong economy is via a republican revolution.

Then the Scottish President of a Scottish republic could give excellent academics like myself an armed escort into universities so then we could start building up the strength of the economy.

The SNP are paddling along shit creek unlike Scottish republicans.

  • BoxingBadBoy77 - The problem is Scottish politicians like Gordon Brown and Alex Salmond have a mutual respect with the universities and leave them to run their own affairs.

It doesn't have to be like that. For example, in the USA, previous presidents have sent federal troops and other officers to force the way in to universities in the South which were banning black students.

People are not banned for their colour in Scottish universities but for daring to exercise academic freedom.
