You really don't get it. The kernel is made by some people, and the tools by others, and the apps by others still. It's not a company that is competing with microsoft. It's a lot of people making code that they care about or need. Alot of times "works for me" is enough for that developer. If you care about polish, you can polish it, or pay someone to do it for you. That's was FOSS is about.

Linux has to be free as in speech, not just free as in beer. Of course we want it to keep free as in beer too!
And imo, ubuntu is a bit buggy some few times but i don't care. I love the way it is!

And Fedora is NOT Ubuntu's contender so stop doing pointless flame wars everyone!
