Adobe's upcoming feature "Content-Aware Fill" is pretty astounding - but it's been available for users of The GIMP for free for a while now, with the "Resynthesizer" plugin written by Paul Harrison.

Debian Linux users can simply 'apt-get install gimp-resynthesizer'.

Windows users can get the plugin from http://registry.gimp.org/files/resynt... (if it doesn't work right, see the thread at http://registry.gimp.org/node/15118 for the fix).

The source code can be downloaded from the plugin's original site at http://logarithmic.net/pfh/resynthesizer
