Pictures at an Exhibition - Reframed

COMING SOON FOR 2009

This summer Leif Ove Andsnes made an unusual stop off in Berlin. This stop-off did not involve a visit to the Philharmonie nor a meeting with fellow musicians. In fact he didn't play a single real note. Instead he joined the visual artist Robin Rhode in a planning session which ended in an ad-hoc "virtual performance" on a white washed factory wall: Robin painted and Leif Ove played. The story goes that this little escapade cost Leif Ove 10 euros as the factory caretaker agreed to the painting session in return for a bucket of white paint so that he could return the wall to normal again the next day.

Where might this all lead you may well ask and the wonderful thing is neither Leif Ove nor Robin know the answer to that yet except for the fact that they have embarked on a project together to tour Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition". Leif Ove will play and Robin will create an onstage installation. Alongside Mussorgsky's own work the two artists will create a balanced and integrated programme which will become "Pictures at an Exhibition - Reframed". The project will be unveiled in November 2009 in New York and the tour will take in the most important cities across Europe before continuing into 2010 with performances as far afield as Beijing and Abu Dhabi.

Working closely together over the next 12 months, Leif Ove and Robin are relishing the opportunity of doing something completely new together and collaborating on ideas and idioms. Here you have two fairly extremes of personality - Leif Ove is the established Scandinavian whilst Robin is the live-wire upcoming South African whose name is fast becoming a buzz word on the contemporary art scene as his first Hayward Gallery Exhibition opens this Autumn in London. The results are bound to be interesting and the approach will definitely be fresh.

How the project develops will be revealed online as well as through a film being made by Norwegian TV and an EMI Classics release. StatoilHydro is the Commissioning Sponsor for the project.
