The waltz is a dance in ¾ time that has its roots in Austria in the early 1800s, where it was known as the Landler. Many composers have written compositions based on the waltz but the undisputed king of this dance music is Johann Strauss Jr. He wrote his first waltz at the age of 6 and never stopped. He had composed hundreds by the time he wrote The Emperor Waltz in 1888, in commemoration of the 40th year of the reign of the Emperor Franz Josef. The piece begins with a melody in the style of an Austrian military march, and proceeds to a series of 5 waltzes, concluding with a coda that recalls the music of the first waltz in the piece.
