Winner of 9 Oscars, that is how good this movie really is. They should have given John Lone an Oscar because he did an amazing job here as Pu Yi.

One of the first white productions that didn't require voice overs.

I was like 4 (or 5) when this came out and was too young to appreciate it. Gotta find a copy of this movie when I have time.

Taking note of that, wasn't it also Xianfeng's fault then? Cixi, also, only had part of the control since Ci'an was also regent, so I don't think everything can be blamed on Cixi, actually.

Fucking Communism from Europe destroyed their culture and the "Modern China" man accepted their appetite for greed. Recommend you to check out the Hong Kong movie- Opium War before watching this film.

The Qing would not have even been a dynasty if it weren't for the mistakes of Ming. Especially towards the middle to end of the Ming the Emperors were weak, their rule ineffectual often with banditry and using the Jinyiwei to terrorize and hold power. The Qing on the otherhand had great leaders like Kangxi and were is considered one of the most sucessful dynasties. Sure, towards the end it was a failure but so was every other dynasty towards the end of its life.

My Mum took me to see this movie at the George Street Cinema in Sydney but I fell asleep during the screening. I found it slow, but then again I was probably too young to appreciate it's historical significance. From memory there seemed to be a lot of university students there, people in their early twenties or thereabouts.

Qing saved China. You see, in the end of Ming, it was very corrupt, eunuchs disorderd the politics, it deserved replacement by Manchu, the Qing emperors were more diligent than Ming's, the first three emperors Kang, Yong and Qian made China powerful, all it only changed when that stupid woman named Cixi controled Qing and began its prostitute. If that woman never got Qing, I believe Qing would be a powerful constitutional monarchy that rules the world, with Han and Manchu cooperating well.
