This is a bit of a "back blog," recorded on June 3, 2009. I just finished editing it all together.
Today, I talk about caffeine and its effect on the Central Nervous System (CNS.)
The stimulating effects of coffee are great for folks with normal Central Nervous Systems. If you have fibromyalgia, (or live with someone who does), you know that a fibromyalgic's body is anything but "normal."
Our Central Nervous Systems start the day already over-stimulated. Anyone want to take a guess what adding a cup of coffee to the mix will do to things?
In 2008, a researcher named Yunus did a study on fibro, and the Central Nervous System, and came up with a classification that he calls 'central sensitivity syndrome.'
In people with fibromyalgia, neurochemical pathology of the CNS, (spinal cord and brain) causes areas of the brain to become over-sensitized. The entire central nervous system then has an exaggerated response to noise, smell, pain, (and other stimuli), thereby causing an amplification of pain.
In this same blog, I also provide some humorous anecdotes from my recent knee surgery, and share how fibromyalgia fits into that story. Enjoy this week's blog update!
