I was the anchor/producer of the weekend news on WLEX-TV in 1981 and early '82. This is a newscast edited down to show highlights -- an anchor aircheck. It was a sweet job with total creative control. I was also weekend assignment editor and a one-man band. I assigned stories (the ace weekend reporter was Mike Taylor), I shot my own stories, produced the newscast and then anchored it. Back then, they even had me do the weather. What a hoot! Others involved in this newscast are Mark Soc, Andre Kinney (director) and of course Mike Taylor. That was my favorite gig in TV news.

  • Kung Fu fighting Ken Gullette

  • Good stuff! I'm from KY and now work in TV in Birmingham... The music in this intro was used by a station here a LONG time ago. I kinda wish we still used those retro themes.

  • Cool intro! :)

  • As a former 18er, it's always nice to see the old stuff. I like the music! The same music, different cut, as used in the old Paul Udell WTHR Indy clip. I thought it sounded familiar.

  • Wow, that's a cut of On Top of It All that I've never heard before.

  • Great clip! The theme uses a great cut of "On Top of It All" from Al Ham, best known for Move Closer to Your World.

  • I'm a journalism student in college, and I want to be a network anchor someday.

I love the idea of anchors being executive producers and writers. I also love the idea of reporters shooting their own video, writing their own scripts, and piecing stories together by themselves.

You're one of those anchors and reporters, which I look up to.

Love the total indepedence in journalism, but hate being babied, especially by the behind-the-scenes crew.
