You sound a bit harsh and excessive with your criticism. There's nothing wrong with a little "dark and gray" in life. not everything is cotton candy and rainbows. and as for dreary, pick up any old fairy tales book and realize that most kids books are actually pretty gruesome and scary. This is a cute story with a moral by comparison.
