Nishiki Food Market in Kyoto City is a very famous food market and a tourist destination. Specifically it has many shops which sell Japanese pickled vegetables called "Tsukemono". Kyoto's Tsukemono are famous throughout Japan. Tsukemono making has many centuries of history in Japan. In old times when there were no refrigerators, Japanese used picking methods to preserve vegetables for a long time and for use during non seasons. These Tsukemono shops in Nishiki market have small bowls of samples in front of the shops and the visitors can sample them and see how they taste, even if you do not buy.

Of course there are other shops which sell many Japanese foods in Nishiki market. These foods may be exotic looking for tourists but they are part of regular course of meals for the Japanese. Enjoy!!!
