in both the 370z and G37 you're better off with the 7AT. Its maybe not as fun, but its faster and gets better fuel economy.

No it's not pointless to buy an automatic in any car regardless if it has an option of manual transmission or semi-automatic. If you're sick of driving standard transmissions why should you be frowned upon getting an auto or semi-auto just because you're not fitting the "niche" enthusiast mindset?
