However, fighting disbelievers doesn't mean you go around killing random infidel. There are rules of engagement in sharia, for example a combatant is not limited to a fighter in sharia terms, and we have that in Quran and the Sunnah of rasoulallah (saw), and the in the actions of the righteous generations. For example, anyone who supports the infidel army with speech/money/aid(convoys) can be killed, we can take male prisoners from enemy land and ransom them for exchange.

Yes we are commanded to fight the disbeleivers, rasoulallah (saw) said "I was sent with the sword until none but Allah is worshipped", in another hadith "I was commanded to fight man-kind until it testifies there is no god but Allah, and that I am the messenger of Allah". There are two types of jihad, offensive and defensive. Defensive is to kick infidels out of our land, and offensive is to fight infidels in their land to maintain payment of jizya (dawah by force).
