Trainiac Productions has been expanding to many new freight railroading areas in recent weeks, displaying to you some of the railroad action in the Delaware Valley. Now, we are bringing to you a full chase of one of the rarest engines on Norfolk Southern's roster. Norfolk Southern #5290 is one of only two engines in existence on Class I railroads to bear Conrail's Operation Lifesaver paint scheme (the other being NS GP38-2 #5262). Starting out with some switching action, we'll chase the YPMO-R1 through its street-running territory. Throughout this part of the trip, the engines will be long-hood forward, with NS GP38-2 #5283. Then, we'll follow the train all the way back.. this time to it's home of Morrisville Yard!

A Special Thanks goes out to Tim Darnell. His assistance with the chase and information for seeing #5290 were essential to this video. You can view Tim's excellent videos at:

  • wouldn't that job symbol denote a Conrail shared assets train?

  • Yessir. I've actually had the symbol incorrect for some time, now, though. My friend Drew corrected me -- the train is actually CSAO YPMO-01.

  • Great video....

So she's the last survivor of all the Conrail locomotives for OLS.

  • Thanks! And yep... she's walking on thin ice, too. NS keeps moving her around every month. First she was North Jersey...then Northeast Corridor.. then South Jersey/ Camden... now she's on the Morrisville runs. She's gonna be black soon.

  • Great videos, I wish CSX got some Spartan Cab SD70s.

  • The only remaining Conrail -Painted SD70 is leaving Morrisville tonight on either 14G or 21Q.

  • Thanks for this first-rate production. Beautiful camera-work, smart narration, sweet train...and even some street running. Very nicely done.

  • wow! amazing catch, excellent video too, it's hard enough just trying to find conrail these days let alone 5290

  • Long live Conrail!

  • Please accept my video response of Conrail Operation Lifesaver #5262 in Jackson, Michigan!

  • Great Video, but I just caught Conrail (NS) 5262 in conrail operation lifesaver paint in Michigan. I think that there are actually two mabey three Conrail units still in OLS paint.

  • ooh i saw the OLS engine the other day!

  • I once saw 5290 in an NS yard in Detroit

  • Definitely have seen it in Bethlehem numerous times.

  • When I had originally caught NS #5290 in the early winter of 2009, someone had posted a picture of an engine claiming it to be NS #5262 (in black paint). The numbers were hard to read but the poster claimed it was NS #5262. I should not have "assumed" it was that engine nor should I have declared 5290 as the last remaining CR OLS unit. That was my own mistake and regret saying what I did. A big ole "my bad" on my part...

  • I cught one of the last remaining CNW Operation Lifesavers 2 days ago
