First who says that aliens would have a collectivist mindset or even anything we are familiar with?
Second, the point is that an advance alien species would not take any chances to allow anyone else to develop to their level and challenge them. To your surface worm analogy, even surface worms could be dangerous if allow to mature into deadly vermin, or evolve into a more dangerous species.
@TheVoiceOfReason93 I don't think that aliens would be afraid of us, we're surface worms. While they would have the ability to traverse millions of light years, we struggle to get off of our planet.
While they may operate with a collective mindset; we as humans fight amongst ourselves like cats and dogs because we are divided by our politics, faith, and individual pragmatism versus sympathy.
@hellclaw2 Yeah. 1.0000000 EMP-bombs, to take out all our sattelites, computer networks, and electronics in warfare systems, and it would already be over for us :) Goodbye jet-fighters and ship-radars etc etc. It would be like a modern army, vs an army that needed horse-riders to deliver messages between it´s armies
Humanity did not become the dominant species on Earth just by being smart - we become the dominant species because we are smart AND utterly ruthless. We stand in uncontested on our planet simply by virtue of being a nasty unstoppable super-predator. Our ancient, hostile world taught us to be vicious to other lifeforms which might kill us. Chances are other alien intelligences evolve the same way. When we would look at one another, what would aliens think of us as first? A partner, or a prey?
One perfectly logical explanation that they would invade: fear. Think in their shoes; it's terrifying knowing there's another alien species out there who are probably just as smart and capable as they are, but they can't understand them. And if they advance as quickly as they do and they don't grasp their true intentions, they would either have to spend the rest of their lives living in fear that at any moment the aliens might turn on them, or decide not to take any chances and strike first.
you cant pass up the fact we as "worms" can use weapons that unload the power of the SUN in your face i dont think we would give up without a fight

The only reason i can think of, why aliens might invade us, is to protect them selves from US! And strike first to be safe.
