Don't know if that was a rhetorical question or not, but what I think needs to be done is that upon the publishing of a paper the authors must make all raw data, processed data, and computer code used to generate the results available to the public via the internet.

In this day and age, if a scientist can't do that, they don't have a product that suitable for publication in a press release, let alone in a major journal or to be used as a guide for policy makers.

changes the fact that Americans score badly compared to other industrialized nations on questionnaires that test basic scientific knowledge. Furthermore, the inability of many credible news agencies and people commenting on youtube to do the research on why the e-mails, when read in context, do not suggest the kind of forgery of data that everyone is accusing them of, is disturbing.

MagicJavaTV, IMO, correctly points out that this is doubly true when the data and its interpretation is used to make policy decisions that affect everybody.

What's also disturbing to me, however, is that even if the data were freely available, it wouldn't help most people in figuring out what's going on in this debate.I don't think saying that not ALL Americans are scientifically illiterate

Sorry, you're right, I was unfair. Youtube doesn't make it convenient to discuss our disagreements in full, but I should have given the reasoned response your comment deserves:

The public's lack of access to the raw data from the researchers at East Anglia is very troubling to me. The researchers should be held up to a higher standard, in which all of their data is available to anybody on the internet, even if it is at considerable inconvenience to themselves.
