Stay tuned for more videos showing the train running!
Here's a pretty in-depth video on how I made my Back to the Future 3 model locomotive and rail road delorean.
Follow the steps shown in tho move to create your own model of the train and delorean like I did, it's not that hard and can be done for under $100. It took me 3 days, well pretty much all weekend, to build my model.
I'll provide you with as much as I can give you, anything from links, to the custom decals for the train that I made. Message me if you have any questions, I will not respond to comments, and NO I AM NOT SELLING MY MODEL, the propose of this video is for you to make your own.
STEP 1: Buy the base model, I recommend ebay because that's where I aught all 3 of mine.
Don't forget it can be any color, it doesn't matter because you're going to paint it anyways.
If your having trouble finding a model to buy, try searching for things like: 4-6-0, ten wheeler, Tyco, or Mantua. Just make sure you get a train that's in "HO" scale.
STEP 2: Once you receive your train it's time to look for supplies. The supplies you will need are:
* Gloss Black Spray Paint (any brand).
* Flat Black Enamel Model Paint.
* Small flat headed screw driver.
* Small paint brush.
* Sticker/Label printer paper (decals).
* Roll of tape, preferably not plastic.
* Large paper/news paper for painting surface.
All that should be pretty cheap if you don't already have at least half of it.
STEP 3: Dissect the locomotive. Take everything off and out of the train, keep note of where everything went and don't loose any screws. take it completely apart until you only have the plastic chassis.
STEP 4: cover up the areas on the chassis that you don't want to paint with tape, I show you where to put the tape in the video.
STEP 5: take it out and pray it down with the Gloss Black spray paint. Don't forget the cab and the tender.
STEP 6: after it dries completely and isn't sticky, take it in and hand pain the parts with tape on them with the Flat Black model paint. Paint the cow catcher and anything else that needs to be painted as well.
STEP 7: put back on the bell, smoke stack, and side railing on the locomotive chassis, carefully hand paint them all the Flat Black color as well.
STEP 8: after you've painted everything and it's all dried, re-assemble the locomotive completely and make sure you do it right. After that take the sticker/label printer paper and print out the decals, I have taken the liberty of making them for you so all you have to do is print them, cut them out, and apply them to the locomotive in the right spots.
Once you put the decals on the locomotive your pretty much finished, feel free to do any touch up work you want. Also post a video response of your finished product! I would love to see it!
how would I cut the railroad wheels and glue them?
deathstarmygnr 9 months ago
@deathstarmygnr It's a little complicated, the way that I found that worked best was to take some classic plastic HO train wheels and cut the axle off the two wheels so they are just two separate wheels, then take a small metal tube or rod and cut it to the length of the underside of the delorean without the wheels with a little extra on both sides to connect to the wheels. There is a more refined way of doing this I'm sure but I'm no pro.

@DafAnimationStudios
Thank you. I have few other questions. Would a metal coat hanger work for the rod? Also what length did you cut the wood for both the wheel coupler and Delorean engine? And I took out the bell like you said, but when I took it out, the bell broke. Do you know if any company makes a good replacement bell?

@deathstarmygnr No a coat hanger would be hard to get perfectly straight and the metal is pretty flimsy and would bend easily. There was no particular length nor can I go back an measure it so your going to have to eyeball it like I did. And Super glue is your friend, you would have to buy a whole new engine.

You showed a lot of creativity and attention to detail in building the models! I bet people at a train show would get a kick out of seeing the models in action!

@Petemonster62 Hey that's a great idea! And I'm actually rebuilding them because I wanted a better quality model and the shitty tyco model I built this out of is very cheap so I'm thinking of kitbashing a new one.
