Afghan and NATO forces are calling the capture of a senior leader of Afghanistan's Haqqani network a "significant milestone" in disrupting the group's operations.

A statement described Haji Mali Khan as one of the highest ranking members of the network.

The Pakistani-based group has close ties with both the Taliban and al-Qaeda, and has been blamed for a spate of recent attacks.

Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse reports from Kabul.
