  • When Dave was putting together the Late Night show in late 1981, he had no idea who he'd get to be the bandleader. An NBC exec suggested Paul. Dave remembered Paul from SNL and said "Wow, could we get HIM?" Dave set up a meeting between the two and the rest, as they say, is TV history.

  • Paul was born in Fort William (now part of Thunder Bay), but no one knows Fort William, and everyone knows Toronto, so I suspect that is why he took poetic licence to say he's ''from'' Toronto. Toronto IS where he first played professionally.

  • I thought Shaffer was from Thunder Bay.

  • He deserved an Oscar for his bit in Spinal Tap.
