Dr. Irving Weissman, director of the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine speaks on "Normal and Neoplastic Stem Cells" in the Procrastinator Theater in MSU's Strand Union Building.

In 1988, Weissman became the first to isolate in pure form any stem cell in any species when he isolated the blood-forming stem cell in mice. He subsequently isolated the human blood-forming stem cell, the human neuronal stem cell, and the human leukemia stem cell. His work has opened up an entirely new area of scientific research with enormous potential for life-saving therapies.

Weissman is a Montana native and a 1961 Montana State College graduate. He received his medical degree from Stanford in 1965. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1989 and was named California Scientist of the Year in 2002. In 2008, he won the Robert Koch Prize, which is widely regarded as the leading international scientific prize in microbiology.

Weissman's lecture is part of the Kopriva Science Seminar Series, which is funded through an endowment created by Phil Kopriva, a 1957 microbiology graduate from MSU. Kopriva, who died in 2002, also created an endowment to fund the Kopriva Graduate Fellowship Program, which provides support and opportunities for graduate students in the College of Letters and Science, particularly in the biomedical sciences. The series features six seminars annually, with talks provided by MSU graduate students, faculty members and guest speakers.

  • USA have lost this race and will be seeing more and more loss in its grip on the people around all the money making medical industries to countries who are willing to help people with diseases that put people in a situation that is like do or die.

    I had no choice, if I didnt do something I would die. And USA had a huge huge charge, no promises for healing and a long life in suffering. To me it is a no brainer.

  • The stem cells are bought in a cord blood bank, matched with your immune system , balancing the white blood cells, red bloodcells, your focus of healing and some other things. It is then injected into the fat tissue and it goes to work.

    The research is so way behind in USA that it is embarrassing. So, I am almost healed from a so called incurable disease and is still in treatment in Mexico.

  • he is wrong and need to educate himself on cord blood stem cells. They are some of the most useful and variable stem cells and is used to heal almost any tissue now a days. In mexico, Thailand and china it is used successfully all the time.

  • A universal benefit reported by every patient has been the recovery of bladder control. Most MS patients have various bladder control symptoms that include urinary urgency, incontinence, nocturia, or urinary hesitancy as a result of the disruption of electrical impulses from the brain to the nerves and muscles that are involved in emptying the bladder (pudenal nerve, urethral sphincter, detrusor muscle).
