well the upgrade worked well - now up and running a full 64 bit Linux based system... it's not a HUGE processor, but it's kind of a moot point as energyXT hasn't had a full 64bit makeover yet (checked their site - it's still in the pipeline apprently... so it will 'only' use 1 core to run it currently)

Yeah with synthesis software you are really just going to need better hardware. However, I have used Linux before and it does run (VERY) much smoother than windows. There is no Linux native version of Mulab but it does work fine n wine when you set up the jack audio drivers. Bitiwg (an ableton clone) will be Linux naive. LMMS is currently the best Linux native daw though. So pick your poison out of them all. :) Hope this helps

is that cross-platform... I run a Linux based PC, as it's a bit old and Windows 7 would EAT resources. Really, to do what I want to do without hindrance my PC really needs a motherboard/memory upgrade

energy XT is a good 'Swiss army knife' program. Used it for some time now, although some claim there's limitations to it... I've yet to find something it won't do happily when it comes to editing and composing to adding a bit of production 'sheen' to tracks prior to finalising them. For me, it works well - does what's needed and doesn't eat system resources. So, for me it works well... just don't assume that it will make every track turn to gold and it's all good.
