I remember this ending. You fought the last boss only after fighting through every other boss in the game a second time. By then you had no energy left and a single hit would take you out. I remember getting very um frustrated as a kid and saying things like "Must win! Must beat the Nintendo!" among other things that might get me into trouble if I posted them on Youtube. This game has no mercy.
The day i finally reached that ending screen on 1943, was a red letter day for me in terms of NES gaming. It took me 2 days just to decompress from all the stress incurred while playing the game 1 week after i bought it.
@dbonanno It's actually called Yamato in the Arcade and PCE versions.

What a great way to end 1943: by sinking the biggest, baddest battleship of all time: the Yamato!
Btw, I wonder why they renamed the Yamato to "Tokutako" in this game?
