The Katadyn Vario water filter technology uses a 0.3 micron multi-stage filer including ceramic, glass-fiber catridge, and activated carbon. The capacity of the Vario micro filter is rated at 500 gallons (1,875 liters). The unit meets EPA purification standards for bacteria and protozoa including cysts, Giardia, Cyrptosporidia, Amoebae, Lamblia, E-coli, Salmonella, and Cholera.

The Katadyn Vario filter could be used for scout troops, camping, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, or wilderness adventures including hunting and fishing. The filter could also be used in a disaster situation or emergency event, and added to a survival bug-out bag. The Vario filter is unique in that it can be operated in two different flow modes; faster-flow and longer-life modes depending on the turbidity of the water.

This filter would make a good entry-level unit for backpacking, hiking, camping, or prepping. Down the road you can always buy another filter cartridge for an additional 500 gallons to bring the total up to 1000 gallons for this unit.

  • Great video and very informitive.....I was wondering what you think of the water bottle filter that they make

  • @alexjonesviewer I actually own that filter as well – it’s part of Katadyn’s Extreme series - but mine is at least 7 years old, although I think it still uses the same internal component. That filter is my main bug-out-filter…it never leaves my bug-out bag because it’s a dip and go filter. Maybe I’ll do a review of that filter if there’s interest. If you watch my ‘Your Greatest Need: Water Storage’ video, I do talk about the Extreme filter.

  • In terms of "bang for the buck" how would you compare the Vario to the Pocket you have reviewed. Point of use is southern USA backpacking and emergency evacuation bag.

  • @morgandewolfe Very good question. Check out the Combi filter. 13,000 gallons and much cheaper. Hope this helps.

  • great review and very in depth, subbed and also what exactley does the activated carbon do?

  • @MrZtroop Activated carbon removes impurities from water such as pesticides or other trace chemicals. It also removes any unpleasant odors from the water and makes the water taste really good. Most water filters usually have an activated carbon component.

  • i was wondering if i could use activated carbon for fish tank filters. i mean 13 bucks for a big jug of activated carbon or 13 bucks for one little packet of it. anyway get back to me if ya know any info if its the same stuff and if its all save or not thank you

  • @BlackCatSaloon Thanks for the suggestion, checking into it now. :)

  • It would be cool to mod the pre filter with a quick connect kit from CamelBack. Like $5 - $7.

  • @BlackCatSaloon thanks! :D
