A video of Quake1 game with the "fisheye" effect. Pretty cool and also allows you to use very high FOV values (180, 270, or even 360+).
This method of representing 3D-space is called 5-point (or curvilinear) perspective in art.

  • It was done by changing the way Quake renders the completed view. Six views of the in-game environment are produced for every frame: forward, back, left, right, above and below.

    Then a lookup table is used to source each pixel required for the resulting fisheye view from the six views that Quake rendered using its normal rendering routines.

    By far the most fiddly part of the whole modification was getting all the pitch, yaw and rolls to translate properly.
