Of course they're great for full-force impact combat, but this is...something else. My friend John at the crystal sticks tent at the GA Rennaisance Festival decides to try something else. Of course, Starfire blades are full-tang, carbon steel and darned heavy, which is why this is harder than it may look. :)

  • Does anyone know or practice the art of actually using a scimitar. I imagine it would be similar to a messer, but I am curious about if there are any people out there interpreting or practicising middle easter scimitar fighting.

    Thanks in advance

  • @fp470 Great question! There might be an outside chance that the SCA might teach scimitar fighting or be familiar with the style, but they're more Western in focus normally.

"True" scimitar fighting would actually be from horseback, since the blade was designed for slashing strokes similar to a cavalry saber, but the curved style blade also adapted well (as a cutlass) for shipboard fighting since there's less room to swing a longer, straight sword.

  • Huh, I think they might let you have axes at the MN faire, but they have to be covered up with something and peace tied; I could be wrong though. I never lug a weapon around with me because I'm usually already weighed down with drums =p.

  • heh... I save my drum-lugging for the weekly after-Faire drum-circle/dance (at a nearby restaurant that we kinda...take over), whence I bring three of my drums. :)

  • Edit: Unless you work at the shop that sells them or are approved for stage combat (derr) =p.

  • Right, and I work at Starfire Swords' booth at the Georgia Faire. Weapons are normally required to be peace-bound.

GARF also has a rule that bans anything except swords and daggers from being brought in, at least according to the front gate sign. Seems like that'd be unfair to people with small axes, warhammers, bows and arrows, costume pistols, etc.

  • hahahha that's awesome... :)

  • @Pellaz2112 Well only reason I ask is because there must habve been a mid-eastern style that probably incoporated the scimitar, saif and shamshir for foot since I have read up a little bit on Mid east history c.1100-1350 and they caputre towns, have infantry and there are smoe duels mentioned (on foot). Obviously i would say from horseback was the main use, but there would obviously be a need to use it on foot given their history.

  • Love it! =D

  • beautiful. utterly amusing xD
