Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 Slowed down by recordmydesktop

This computer is running an i7 930 @2.80GHz with 6G of RAM. I was disappointed to have recordmydesktop slow the system down dramatically. Recordmydesktop ran faster on the Eee PC 1000 that I used to record a number of screencasts. If anyone has any suggestions to speed recordmydesktop up or a better alternative let me know.
