This drill comes from our good friend and coach, Asphalt Green's Craig Keller. Building a great catch in freestyle takes focus, using simple, inexpensive tools ads a creative way to get your swimmers to focus out front.

  • "Also, don't take apart the lane lines for the disks", you'd think that's a given.

  • @ArnoldSchwarznigger You'd think... but nothing is a given these days. ;)

  • is that what those things are for? how are you supposed to even remove them?

  • @ihaveabox - I wouldn't say this is exactly what those things are for... but when pools install new, or repair older lane lines... there are typically extras of these laying around. Many coaches grab them and use them as swimming tools. Basically... they're pretty much free when they're left over, so it's just being resourceful. If you don't have them laying around, holding pennies, or something small in your hands also works.

  • I have not had issues dropping my elbow but when we do this drill, whatever minute flaw there is in my catch, this drill finds it. On the rare occasions where everything is perfect, I have had some success focusing on improving rotation and or breathing on my weak side.
