  • It may be whatever to someone born in Bosnia, but if, like the majority of people in the world, you weren't born in Bosnia, then it IS a folk song.

  • I think it might be nice to have an English translation of the lyrics here as well. So here goes, not the most poetic translation, but it should do. :)

  • Again, many thanks for that.

  • Thanks for posting this. :) A small correction, though. The correct translation of the song's title is "In Istanbul on the Bosphorus".

  • Thank you for that correction!

  • A tear fell from his eye And he slumped dead onto the sofa Old Muslim Allah ilallah, salam alaykum * When pasha's wife Heard of the sad news That pasha has moved on To the other world A tear fell from her eye And she slumped dead onto the sofa Pasha's love Allah ilallah, salam alaykum * * Newer versions have "La ilaha ilallah, salam alaykum"
  • In Istanbul on the Bosphorus ailing pasha is lying on his bed His soul is about to part To the black earth he's about to go Prayer is sacred to him So muezzin from the minaret Is reciting at the top of his voice Allah ilallah, salam alaykum * (Pasha:) Since you've served my harem faithfully My servants May each one of you take At least one wife for himself
