Ti-sarana or taking refuge in the triple gem is the most quintessential idea of getting on the path of the Buddha's teachings. Basically one takes refuge in the wisdom of the Buddha, his teachings (the Dhamma) and the community of wise teachers who understand the teachings (Sangha). In Pali:

Namo tasa bhagavato, arahato, samasambuddhasa

Buddham saranam gacchami,
Dhammam saranam gacchami,
Sangham saranam gacchami.

Dutiyami buddham saranam gacchami,
Dutiyami dhammam saranam gacchami,
Dutiyami sangham saranam gacchami

Tritiyami buddham saranam gacchami,
Tritiyami dhammam saranam gacchami,
Tritiyami sangham saranam gacchami

Namo tasa bhagavato, arahato, samasambuddhasa.
