Absolutley nothing prevents america from building the best cars in the world. Except their determination not to. Now that GM hit the reset button and are coming back from bankruptcy, they could easily have re-emerged as a quality brand alongside forexample BMW. Instead they took the 50 billion bailout money and fled the country. To sell cars to Asia where you can still get away with squeeky plastic for the masses. Todays GMs are made in Brazil, Mexico, and rebadged Korean Daewoo.

@Janusha i get what you're saying there. i'm not trying to say that america needs to be better than everyone else. we just need cars that are competitive in both performance and quality across the entire market of cars that people actually buy. with more attention to detail, less outsourcing, and more emphasis on overall performance rather than just power, america could provide quality cars that people might like to buy. i admit i may have worded the previous response towards a nationalist view.

Its true US cars are more concerned with competing amongst eachother. Therefore your performance cars arent even marketed abroad. However I dont get this NEED to mix nationalism into cars. As if having 1 internationally competitive car makes up for the rest. Surely its important to have a healthy business before appealing to the flagwaving fanatics that just want SOMETHING to use as battering ram for a fictional american superiority. Such as the SSC Aero which in reality is just a quick kit-car.

If the Corvette shows us anything its that you CAN get the supercar experience without tech, styling, expensive materials or sophistication. But thats exactly why it not a supercar. Sure its fast enough with its 640 hp but where is the quality. While its easy to say "bang for the buck" its quite possibly the worst quality vehicle in the world for its price. Its Porsche money but for that you get plastic interior, steering wheel out of a Chevvy Malibu and seats out of a mailorder catalogue.

@Janusha ok, that i can agree with 100%. GM and Chrysler fucked up pretty good. but the American automakers just don't focus on making top end performance cars. the only cars we have left with any performance potential aren't that great. they all try to be competitive with each other and not with their European and Japanese counterparts. the only attempt at anything close to a supercar at the moment is the ZR-1 (which is nice). there just needs to be a car to make a statement that we don't suck

Sure there are a few competetive cars in USA but amongst all the infernal flagwaving I must say its hard to find anyone willing to concede that others might do cars better. Even now that the entire US car business is in crisis recovery. GM taking their 50 billion rescue funds and fleeing the country while Chrysler being given away to Fiat for free. Meanwhile there are currently hundreds of top end GT cars, supercars, hypercars out of Europe. Im not insulting anyone as much as stating the facts.

@Janusha ok, i never said they were the best in the world. you misunderstood that from the start. i'll be the first to admit that our cars are not that great compared to some others. but there's still the fact that a few of our cars even if we had help with them are good cars. if you can't see that then that's your thing and i won't bug you about it, but please don't try to insult us by making us out to be a bunch of fat rednecks with nothing better to do than watch nascar and beat off.
