It wasn't being a coward. He was just toying with his opponent since he knows that he's practically already won.

That's a dumb explanation. P1 wasn't doing anything to win. He already knows that he's won even before the timer ended.

He had judgement on his side, more characters remaining and more HP. He knows that he's already won the game so he decided to just toy with his opponent for the remaining few seconds.
