It's the best scene in any movie I've ever seen. Every woman in the room thinks he's singing it to her, and then the gradual focus on Lily and her heartbreaking expression. Pure genius, and a gorgeous song to boot.

The looks on Lily Tomlin's face in this scene are simultaneoulsly hear-breaking and highly attractive. IMHO she is the sole honorable character in the film. Stuck in a marriage with her schlep of a husband, a deaf child that demands her constant attention, she still stays with her family in spite of the attention from the hyper-appealing Caradine. Bravo! And, gosh, what a luscious song, beautifully sung, and played with such feeling. This version is SO superior to that on his solo album.

Definitely the best scene in this overblown mess of a movie. You almost believe the character is really capable of loving somebody. Almost.

I was kinda bored with this film up until this scene where it just totally redeemed itself. Simply beautiful.

damn,..must have passed some 30 years since l've watched this movie as a little kid and got completely blown away by this song.l only had a small dictaphone and put it beside a TV,stood quiet and recorded it with all the noises around, then played it on and on,day after day. This song still crawls under my skin, all those memories, like travelling back in time, never to return again...

Such a haunting, beautiful song, full of plaintive longing. Add to that how completely stunning Geraldine Chaplin is in this scene, surely at her absolute loveliest. Lily Tomlin just nailed her character here, vulnerable and overwhelmed; Shelly Duvall is as unattractive and vacuous as that part called for. And though I'm a guy, David Carradine is so good-looking and sexy as he sings and skewers the women, it IS 'easy' to understand why four of them are totally infatuated with him.

Tomlin's acting here without any words is just breath-taking! just as much as this song is!
