"Used car salesman"...that's cute, and dare I say a *wee bit accurate. Let's put that comment in perspective: if Bernstein was literally a used car salesman and alive today, he'd be the CEO of Detroit. Think about what he sold for most of his life: antiquated music to the masses. And they bought it! Amazing, considering the tenor of music at the time. His combination of pop and classical elements alone define the crux of popular classical music of his era.
Now for a description of his conducting: ehh...but who cares? He got the sounds he wanted out of the groups he fronted. I personally love Bernstein and his music, enjoy most of his interpretations (this might have been a little schmaltzy, but it was still beautifully rendered), and will be happy when my fiance purchases me the Bernstein Mahler boxset for X-mas.
One can only imagine if Mozart ever heard his music performed this well. Thank you for posting this beautiful performance. I've heard six performances of this piece and I like this one the best.
mozart te amo, eres mi odolo, mi compositor, adorado mi angel, despues de DIOS Y MIFAMILIA Y AYEGADOS, TU ERES LO MAXIMO, mis respetos, sin duda me llegastes al alma,
Bernstein was a showman. He often danced on stage and leaped about like a monkey but that's not conducting.
Karajan was just as much a showman but didn't resort to such obvious over-acting. Unlike Bernstein, Karajan was always in full control of his forces. It's Jim Carey vs Al Pacino.
You seem to subscribe to the naive notion that success and popularity are accurate indicators of a conductor's ability. In fact there is no correlation.
OK, my mistake. You're right, we should adjudicate conductors as if they were contestants on an episode of "Dancing with the Stars." Glad that's cleared up.

Ho ho ho.
Mozart would have been dismayed at this sloppy and tasteless interpretation.
