Move over Hingham. Plymouth has its own version of Derby Street Shoppes. The Village at Colony Place is drawing attention to its opening this week with a full slate of entertainment and shopping events over the weekend. The roughly 150,000-square-foot complex, with 20 stores and eight restaurants, is designed as a "lifestyle center"
with wide sidewalks, benches and outdoor eating areas. "I'm a big fan of the Derby Street Shoppes and couldn't wait for this to open," said Michelle Tougas, 42, a
Plympton resident. "Now I can shop for women's clothes without driving so far." Tougas was shopping on Thursday at the new complex off Route 3's Exit 7 with her daughter Chloe, 2, and sister, Ashley, 29, of Plymouth. Geri Eaniri of Marshfield and her sister Beverly Hussey of Pembroke also loved the new shopping area.
"It's really nice," Eaniri said as the two headed back to the car to drop off full shopping bags and get back to more shopping.
Celebrations for this weekend's grand opening event kicked off on Thursday -- and the parking lot was packed. Donald Smith -- a partner at Middleboro-based developer Saxon Real Estate Partners, which developed the plaza -- was pleased with Thursday's turnout and expected even heavier traffic over the weekend. "This is just the beginning," he said on Thursday. "Tomorrow we have 'Desperate Housewives' events for women, sporting events Saturday for men, and family events for Sunday. We tried to cover everyone."
The new shops combined with the plaza's existing big box retailers makes Colony Place one of the largest open air shopping centers in the state. Smith said more shops are slated to open in both the "Village" area and main area of Colony Place. His company owns adjacent land to accommodate future expansion of the shopping center.
The Village area includes new stores such as Justice, a clothing store catering to preteens, DSW Shoe Warehouse, Croma, an upscale bistro and pizzeria, and Ulta, which offers skin and body care products coupled with salon services such as hair care and massages. The shopping center includes chain stores such as Talbots, Lane Bryant, and J. Jill, as well.
