I haven't analyzed the lyrics meticulously...

but my first impression was that it seemed to talk about love, or at least in a platonic manner...rather than the huge gao between the few wealthy and the massive populace of poor ...

it may be an attempt to show, using the juxtaposition between a poor and rich persons life, how the things we believe that we need are often only desires. With how little those on the left side have, it begs the question whether any of the things on the right side are necessities at all. It shows the corrupting power materialism inflicts on the wealthy.
