HRH Prince Edward meets the pupils of Burnham Copse Primary School in Tadley, Hampshire to officially open the new school - 27th November 2008.

Royal opening for Burnham Copse Primary School Press Release

His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex will be officially opening Burnham Copse Primary School in Tadley, Basingstoke on Thursday, 27 November.
The Earl of Wessex will be given a tour of the school before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion. The school was created when the former Burnham Copse Infant and Junior schools were amalgamated to form a 210-place primary school. The new school occupies the former Junior School building and cost £3m to refurbish and extend.
Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mrs Mary Fagan, Councillor Tim Knight, Hampshire County Councils Vice-Chairman and Councillor Patricia Banks, Hampshire County Councils Executive member for Children and Families, will be among those welcoming the Earl to the school and extending a welcome for him to tour the building and see some of the facilities the school now offers pupils.
As a result of the recent refurbishment it now boasts specialist teaching spaces including a food technology room which overlooks a kitchen courtyard garden, a group tutorial room, art and design space with attached kiln room, a music and drama room and an ICT suite. The new facilities are also available to pre-school children and other groups outside school hours, making the school an integral part of the local community. Plans are well underway to share school spaces as an extension to the facilities offered by the adjacent Community Centre.
Classrooms are colour coded to give each a unique identity and are an important part of a range of measures incorporated into the design of the school by Hampshire County Councils architects to ensure it promotes inclusivity and is accessible to all. Other features include a lift to ensure all teaching spaces are accessible to those with mobility impairments, external covered walkways, relocated vehicular access and sheltered outside teaching spaces.
The new school has also been designed to be environmentally sensitive with naturally vented classrooms, high performance glazing, water conserving taps in toilet areas and energy efficient lighting with occupancy sensors and daylight linking. A new smart energy metering system allows pupils to monitor energy consumption at the school as part of their curriculum. In addition an innovative balcony structure to the front of the school provides vital shade in the summer ensuring classrooms do not overheat as well as being a striking feature of the design marking the schools transition into a learning environment fit for the demands of the 21st century curriculum.
Headteacher Lyn Downes said: Im delighted that The Earl of Wessex will be carrying out the official opening of the school. We are looking forward to the opportunity to share our wonderful new facilities and celebrate the culmination of an extremely successful collaborative project.
Hampshire County Councils Executive Lead member for Childrens Services, Councillor David Kirk, said: This is a memorable day for pupils and staff at Burnham Copse, and indeed, the local community. One of our core priorities is to promote the wellbeing of residents and enhance the quality of place and this school meets both those aims.
The quality of the learning environment plays an important role in a childs education and each year Hampshire County Council makes significant investments to maintain and improve its school buildings. For 2008/08 we pledged to spend £26 million of the County Councils capital budget on improving our schools.
The work that has been carried out at Burnham Copse has resulted in an ideal environment for pupils and staff to make the most of their learning and teaching opportunities helping them to achieve their potential. And as the schools facilities are open to wider use by the community it enhances local amenities and is fast establishing itself as an important community hub.
