Yes, I noticed that. I think he bludgeons an injured John Saxon with a rock (yes, that's our Mitchell!) which is the scene where the mystifying opening stills are taken from.

@textthing If you listen closely one of the times when Mitchell is driving up to Cummins' house, you can hear on the radio an announcement about the death of John Saxon's character. ...but that's all we get in this version.
