Well, if the option stands between "largely unknown but true" and "famous but fake" then I think most real artists would prefer to be largely unknown, so comparing with mainstream "artists" that buys their way into fame isn't really valid.
For fans it should be enough that we love the music, there's no need for us to be bitter about the presence or absence of fame.
