From the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of AMAZING GRACE, a groundbreaking biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the greatest heroes of the twentieth century, the man who stood up to Hitler.

A definitive, deeply moving narrative, BONHOEFFER is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism.

After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double-agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Führer, and was hanged in Flossenberg concentration camp at age 39. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the 20th century.

BONHOEFFER presents a profoundly orthodox Christian theologian whose faith led him to boldly confront the greatest evil of the 20th century, and uncovers never-before-revealed facts, including the story of his passionate romance.

  • The biography evidently achieved its purpose with me. I went on to read Bonhoeffer's Cost of Discipleship, Life, Together, Ethics, and his booklet on the Psalms, all of which are powerful and highly recommended. However, if possible, avoid the compilation of Bonhoeffer excerpts called Testament to Freedom, which suffers from an awkward, politically correct translation.

  • @Rayosun4 I recommend that you read one of the books that Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote (translated into English) if you haven't already, The Cost of Discipleship. It had a profound impact on my life. What Christianity is about is living for Jesus, obeying Him, and knowing Him, pure and simple.

  • This beats most movie trailers by a mile. And it's for a BOOK. This was, in effect, a commercial. But having read the Metaxas book, it brought tears to my eyes.

  • All attractive video does is USE the greatness if Bonhoeffer for the benefit of an author who has an agenda I don't believe that Bonhoefer would appreciate. There's another video here on Youtube that shows Metaxis on the Glenn Beck show arguing that Bonhoeffer was ONE OF THEM, not a liberal and that like them, he would embrace conservatives in America. BS pure and simple. Google "liberalslikechrist cheapgrace" (two words).

  • Bonhoeffer believed in nonviolent resistance. Martin Luther King Jr. was greatly influenced by Dr. Bonhoeffer. He truly agonized over the sin of assasination. He admitted that it was a sin. However, the only ethical justification he could make for himself was that the sufferings of millions outweighed the murder of one tyrant. In "Ethics" he explains that the Christian is constantly caught between a rock and a hard place and must throw himself upon the mercy of God.

  • Amazing man~ What a testimony!
