Super-simple, just for fun project, made this video pretty much just to demonstrate the pretty LED :)

  • ha...cool dude... is it the led... or is it a stompbox also... is it giving you distortion...?

if it's lighting up the led and that's all, you should check out a Dynalevel by conn...

    I got one...

it's just like that only MASSIVE!!!

  • Nope, the LED itself is the cause for the distortion. I guess I could make a stomp box out if it if I got off my lazy ass. The FX chain is guitar > what you see on the breadboard > amp clean channel.

  • @DarrenDoo I don't remember how I had them wired up, I think they were in series in my case though. If your signal isn't beefy enough, your pickups probably aren't up to the task, and you'll need an extra gain stage. LEDs should behave similarly to any other silicon diode, but the cut-in voltage is much higher.

  • @noouch Also, I noticed you have 2 LEDs. I just can't tell have you have them wired up. I'm new to bread boarding. Trying to learn how to use LEDs as diodes.

  • @noouch Not getting that kind of signal with the LED. When I strum it sounds like the signal is starved. I used the schematic on the Beavis Audio page. It has a Bazz Fuss circuit in the "Enough with the Prose! I want to buld something!" section lol.

  • @DarrenDoo Not sure what kind of effect you are referring to. How is your result different from what you hear in the video? Your sound is going to depend a lot on your input signal's voltage and frequency content. Also bear in mind that you are also hearing the mic picking up the guitar itself.

  • @noouch How did you insert the green LED? Because when I've taken the 1N4148 out and tried to put the green LED in it's place, it had no effect like this. What am I missing?

  • @DarrenDoo that is the gut shot :P

  • i messed about with this..i ended up using a lm386 chip and had a nice distortion just with a couple of caps..really simple.nice simple chip too...

  • I built one of these on the breadboard once but found it was quite gated. It needed a booster in front of it (for my Strat anyway). Did you substitute the LED for the Diode between the Collector and Base of the two trannies?

  • hmm...this is alot cleaner than mine
