Kevin smiled as he watched Katie and his Mom talk. It made him happy that his parents liked her, it made him even more happy that, so far, Joe has refrained from saying any typical Joe stuff while they were talking.
“Hey Katie?”
Kevin thought too soon.
“Yeah Joe?”
“Wanna go get some food with me? I’m starving.”
Katie laughed. “Sure Joe. I’m pretty hungry myself. Wanna come Kev?”
Kevin looked at his parents. His father shook his head to the side a little, signaling Kevin to hang back for a second.
“I’ll be right there, you go ahead.”
Katie smiled and let Joe help her up. The two were off in the direction of the food in no time. Nick gave them a three second head start and asked if he could go as well.
“Okay, but take Frankie and help him Nicholas!” Mrs. Jonas called after the excited sixteen year-old as he led his younger brother to the food.
“So Katie.” Mr. Jonas began.
“What do you think of her?” Kevin asked, trying to hold back his concern.
His Mom smiled, “We think she’s wonderful Kev.”
Kevin let out a long sigh of relief.
“Did you not expect us to like her?” His Dad asked.
“No, I was just nervous I guess. And I could tell she was a little nervous too.”
“Well, it can be nerve-racking to meet you date’s parents.”
Kevin nodded.
“Go get your food Kev. Katie is probably wondering where you are.” His Mom told him. Kevin smiled and stood up, leaving the table to find his date. He found them at the breakfast bar, Joe piling his plate high with waffles and french toast. Katie was laughing as he almost dumped his plate full of syrup down the front of him. Kevin grabbed a plate and joined them in line.
“Joe, do you think you have enough food?” He asked, coming up next to his brother.
“No way! Have you seen the dessert bar?” Joe exclaimed. Katie laughed and took the spoon for the syrup from him.
“Yeah Kev! Come on.” she filled the ladle with slightly warm syrup and poured it on her french toast and pancakes. Then taking her plate by one hand, and Kevin by the other, she led him to the desserts.
“How good does all of this look right now?’ She asked.
“Try deliciously amazing.”
“That’s what I thought.” she laughed. “Come on. I want some chocolate covered strawberries.” Katie made her way over to the basket of fresh picked fruit and bubbling chocolate fountain.
“Wow, does that sound good.” Kevin said, following her. When each of them had a filled plate of chocolate covered fruit, they made their way back to the table. Joe, Nick and Frankie were sitting, eating away, but his parents must have gone to get their food. Kevin looked at Joe’s plate, which was already have empty, then at Nick’s, who seemed to have inhaled his entire serving in one breath.
“Nick, where did all of your food go?”
“Umm I ate it.” The confused teen replied.
“More like inhaled it.”
“I was hungry.”
“Really?”
“Kevin, leave Nick alone. You know you are going to finish your plate and go back for more too.” Katie said, defending Nick.
“And how do you know that?” Kevin asked, raising one eyebrow at the beautiful brunette sitting next to him.
“‘Cause, you’re all related. Plus, I saw how excited you got when you saw those desserts.” She laughed as his face turned red.
“You know you were excited too!” Kevin defended himself.
“Never said I wasn’t.” Katie smiled, and put more of the delicious food in her mouth. His parents returned and they finished their meal talking about Katie’s past. Kevin was surprised to know that she was from Massachusetts, and a little disappointed to find out that she was still a Red Sox fan. Three more plates each and one coffee mug full of chocolate later, the Jonas family and Katie stood to leave. Kevin helped Katie into her silver coat and told her to wait with Joe, Nick and Frankie by the elevator.
“Okay, but here’s the money for the meal.” She said, reaching into her bag.
“Don’t worry about dinner Katie. Just go wait with my brothers.”
“Kevin, you’re not paying for me.”
“Yes I am. You don’t need to spend your friend’s money. Give it back to them. I should have offered to pay for you earlier. But I forgot.”
“Kevin.”
“No Katie. I’m paying for you.”
“Kevin, I was going to say thank you.” Katie smiled and went to wait with Joe, Nick and Frankie. Kevin watched her walk away, so sure that he was the luckiest man alive.
