Iphigeneia at Aulis - Ifigeneia - Clytemnestra

"For what is it to die, But to stand in the sun and melt into the wind?"

----Kahlil Gibran

Bernard Knox writes:

Euripidean tragedy is the writing on the Athenian wall. It numbers and weighs; it understands and pities. It does not condemn, for the situtation is beyond judgment; it does not propose reform, for it is beyond action. Euripides attempts to understand to sympathize; but he offers no comfort, no solution, no explination, only sympathy. And this quality is perhaps what made Aristotle say that in spite of his defects we was the most tragic of poets.

  • This is gorgeous.

This is one of my favourite videos on YouTube. So THANK you! :)

Euripides wrote this play some years after he wrote the Iphigenia in Tauris which is set afterwards (in dramatic time) in which she is reunited with her brother Orestes (the little boy you see here).

This movie does show it but at the end of the play Iphigenia is meant to be saved: the goddess Artimis replaces her with a deer. Like the deer killed at the start of this film! Go figure ;)
