Don Shipley left the family farm in Pennsylvania and dropped out of school in 1978 to join the Navy at 17 years old. I spent a couple years in Yokosuka, Japan on a ship before becoming a Navy SEAL in 1984. Various SPECWAR commands during my SEAL career, most of my time was spent at SEAL Team ONE and SEAL Team TWO. Retiring in 2003 after 24 years in the Navy, I run SEAL Training courses for young guys who aspire to become NAVY SEALs and older guys who want to know if they could have been.

@1990PatMorrison Things were a lot different back then as to today. When Don was in the Navy, SEAL Team was not nearly as well known as it is today. It is very difficult to get orders for BUD/S now because so many young guys want to be SEALs, and so the Navy only selects the cream of the crop to go to training. And even so, most of those guys won't make it. Don, Fuch, Mark, Bill, and the rest of the guys who instruct at ESE did, and all excelled in SEAL Team...

I though all Special forces units required a high school diploma, my uncle couldn't join the Green berets for that reason.
