The infamous Gold Cup of 1992 in which Jenny Pitman's stalking horse Golden Freeze succesfully managed to get Carvill's Hill jumping to go to pieces. A crying shame as Carvill's Hill was a true great on his day.
This is one of my favourites days racing ever, couldnt do a thing wrong, backed Duke of monmouth and Repeat the dose ( M Richards Legend) alongwith Cool Ground here. How I longed for a Groundhog Day on this very day!! great memories
this race has great memories for me,the fellow is my all time fav jumper after arkle. he ran in 4 gold cups was short headed twice, 4th and won one without being beaten to death. Sadly I just counted a. maguire, a respected jockey hit the winner cool ground repeatedly from 2 out around 19 times. Adam Condrat the not so well known polish jockey slapping the fellow maybe three times on the run up the hill after being instructed not to hit his horse. Cool ground if my memory is right was never the
@nickynukitty just ended up watching this race after ten months still dont think it was that bad think it it was p schu and lots of horses run who wont finnish in first 3 but if gfreeze would stayed could have been placed he wasnt a complete no hoper and has they say thats racing any way what do you think of race at haydock 2moz long run?or some thing else
Carvills Hill was a tremendous galloper in Soft/ Heavy Conditions. If he had stood up in 1989 the year Desert Orchid won, he would have taken some stopping. The Ground was not soft enough for him to win this Gold Cup.
Great memories brought back to me watching this,as a 16 year old with a pound each way at 25/1 on cool ground, excellent finish to a winning bet and get me into racing...:)
An interesting point to add is that I always hear that Scu used to challenge Desert Orchid for the lead whenever he was racing against him. It may be an apocryphal story but i've heard more than once that Desert Orchid and (I think) Beau Ranger jumped the first few fences of the 1987 King George chase at a quicker pace than the corresponding distance for that year's 2000 Guineas.
Carvill's Hill was injured during the race and never attained the same heights again. I do think Jenny Pitman should not have run Golden Freeze the way he was ridden.
Great ride from Adrian Maguire, he nearly always hugged the rail in a race, not making the horse have to do extra mileage. The best N.H. jockey never to win the british jockeys championship.

Carvils hill temperate let him down. Peter should have let the horse get into his own rhythem instead of forcing the pace
