This hits the nail on the head, many think funk drummers make good jazz guys and vice-versa but from a guy that's the master (Mr Payne) he's setting the record straight, I can't get into jazz I can play it, but it's not my bag, all I like is a funky groove.

i am 20 y/o , been playing and studying drumming for 6 years, what Jim says is tottally true, the last 2 years i've made progress that i never thought i could make, barely go out, unless is something important enough to take me away from the drums, also the fact that most drummers go after the flashy side of drumming, musically speaking, you wont get hired to do a solo unless you are one of those beasts and evenlike that, maybe,....... discipline, and always push the envelope.
Keep drumming!

very well said Jim about learning any subject. The same rules apply to all, which is determination, persistence and step by step progress. Nothing happens in one day except of baby consumption probably :)

Nice overview of what it takes.
Hey hey:
Just checked your comment. Sounds like you've got the right attitude.
Go for the groove. feel it in your body, down low. Keep at it. and best of luck.
