The Half the Sky movement is cutting across platforms to ignite the change needed to put an end to the oppression of women and girls worldwide, the defining issue of our time. Inspired by journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn's book of the same name, Half the Sky brings together video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools to not only raise awareness of women's issues, but to also provide concrete steps to fight these problems and empower women. Change is possible, and you can be part of the solution.

Transcript:
Sheryl WuDunn: The challenge that women and girls face is not an easy topic to talk about but we really think it is the moral challenge of the century.
Susan Sarandon: These problems exist because we created them, so it's up to us to fix them.
Hillary Clinton: The way that Nick and Sheryl use stories to break through the indifference that still exists when you talk about women and girls is exactly the right way to go about it.
George Clooney: We understand the story always. This is how people get engaged.
Sheryl WuDunn: Nick and I wanted to galvanize people into action because we know it takes a world to bring about this change. We're utilizing every tool and platform available to get the message across.
Nicholas Kristof: We are going to be going on a journey to some of the places in the world where the repression of women and girls is truly at its most extreme.
Olivia Wilde: I read Half the Sky and I thought that's really what I want to do. I want to go and see things for myself.
Nicholas Kristof: You've had the traffickers hold a gun to your head?
Somaly Mam: You're going to take their own money. The girl is their money. Of course they're not happy with you.
Nicholas Kristof: It still does seem as if something is wrong if thousands of thousands of girls are getting raped and in all of Freetown, only one rapist is prosecuted.
Gabrielle Union: You know what lasts a lot longer than beauty? Being smart lasts a lot longer than being pretty.
Edna Adan: This little hospital built on a garbage dump, has reduced maternal mortality rates of the women who come here to one quarter of the national average.
Amie Kandeh: We need to be able to have our voices heard.
Urmi Basu: Our biggest challenge here is to create opportunities. Convince the mothers every single day of her existence that your daughter does not have to be bound by fate. She needs to be allowed the power to create her own fate.

Thanks it sounds like you haven't let the bad that happened to you control you & you sound like a level headed balanced female person.:)Thanks madam & good fortune & health to as well. One thing I know is that positive actions is what get results & changes things for the better. "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do."-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe & "All that's necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for enough good men to do nothing".-Edmund Burke

Some men mistake chivalry for control. I prefer equality ... and mutual respect which means I am chivalrous to men too. I will open doors for them, stand up to give them a seat if they have children or shopping etc, its just good manners and should be used to all. Good luck in being a gentle man, and as for it keeping you single, look around for the women who like gentle men. There are plenty of us about.

I cant say I've ever seen a woman call a man gay for not sleeping around a lot. I've seen guys do it to other guys but it can happen. Deal with individuals as individuals. I've had some hideous experiences with some guys, but not all guys are like that and I realise that otherwise I'd never set foot out of the house. Women are not a separate breed with breed characteristics, they are a collection of individuals ... just like men are.

Er, porn is the media arm of the sex industry, the biggest commissioner of human trafficking for sex in the world. The average age of girls being coerced into the sex industry is 13, so much of the material being filmed is with trafficked/enslaved women and girls. Bookers in the industry state on record that they do not tell the girls what they are signing up for as 75% of them would walk out the door. Once in a room of men, its kind of hard to say no due to group and gender dynamics

...women helped kill it ( I suppose some men had a hand it it's destruction too.) Is one to be a gentleman & if so why do the individual's I know who are such or at least strongly try to be such all single? It seemed like you wanted a sincere discussion & that too is my goal madam. Cheerio :) I hope I have obligated you with such.

I repeat, this is not about you. Go deal with your brother men and how they treat women. Your brother had a bad experience with door etiquette with one person. I've said no to people who want to talk to me and they've literally had a fit too ... everyone's different ...

... we fit to be totally honest with you madam (if we do not play sports we are called gay & if we do not sleep w/ multiple women we are called the same by both men & women alike & if we act like jerks then we seem to get lots of women -I've seen that happen so much that is doesn't even faze me anymore.) I have found that some women have a kind of autopilot that turns on whenever a guy is around & the women start to be unnecessarily abrasive without prior case for such. Chivalry is dead & ....

About "porn" all I know is if attractive women did not choose that particular work (& I am talking about the U.S. now) then no one would watch it. My point is I hear often the line that female adult actresses (I am trying to be polite) are being used with no mention about the dudes actors involved like hello they are being used just as much. Plus the book that women made popular "50 Shades of Gray" is about S&M which seems like not the best thing for women to promote. Us guys are unsure were...

I would never call you anything besides a woman or I'd address you as madam (many women I've addressed as "madam" have told me they have never been called that.) Honestly I've been told that I am to nice more than once & on all occasions I was told this by women (so that leaves us guys in the dark as what we're to do.) My brother use to open doors in high school for girl's until a girl got mad at him for it & mean she literally had a fit (about what right did he think he had to open her door.)..
